About Adi Kailash

Adi Kailash and Om Parvat are two highly revered, sacred sites situated in the far northern regions of India, in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, near the Indo-Tibetan border.

These locations are central to a revered pilgrimage known as the Adi Kailash & Om Parvat Yatra. This pilgrimage attracts not only spiritual seekers but also adventurers and nature lovers due to the stunning Himalayan landscapes and the mythological importance of the region.

Adi Kailash Travel Guide

Adi Kailash, also known as Chhota Kailash, is often referred to as the “Mini Kailash” and is considered the abode of Lord Shiva in the local traditions of the Kumaon region. It is believed that Adi Kailash is as sacred as Mount Kailash in Tibet, with which it shares significant mythological and spiritual connections. According to Hindu mythology, it is said to be the place where Lord Shiva meditated before retreating to the higher altitudes of the Himalayas.

   – The region is revered by local Kumaoni people and others who visit for religious purposes, seeking blessings and spiritual awakening.

   – The name “Adi Kailash” is derived from the word “Adi” meaning original, referring to the mythological notion that it was the first place where Lord Shiva resided, just like Adi Badri of the Panch Badri pilgrimages in Uttarakhand..

About Om Parvat

Om Parvat is a mountain that naturally forms the shape of the sacred Hindu symbol “Om” on its snow-covered slopes. This symbol is considered a representation of the cosmic sound, or the source of the universe, making Om Parvat an extraordinarily sacred place for Hindus.

   – The presence of this “Om” shape is considered a divine phenomenon, drawing pilgrims to the region. Many believe that the mountain, being shaped like the Om symbol, amplifies the spiritual energy of the area.

   – There is a popular belief among the locals that Om Parvat is also connected to Lord Shiva, who is said to have performed tapasya (meditation) in this region.

Adi Kailash historical and Religious Significance

  • The Adi Kailash & Om Parvat Yatra is considered one of the most spiritually enriching pilgrimages. Though it is not as popular as the Mount Kailash Yatra in Tibet, it holds immense importance, especially for people from Uttarkhand, with their roots in Kumaon and Garhwal region, as well as with the Saivites (Shiva worshippers). Pilgrims typically visit these places for blessings, spiritual healing, and to connect with the divine energy of the region.
  • Local Myths and Legends: According to local folklore, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat were places where sages and gods meditated and performed austerities. It is believed that Lord Shiva, along with Goddess Parvati, lived in the region for a long time.
  • Earlier the yatra (pilgrimage) to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat involved an enduring trek of more than 100kms through rugged terrain, crossing through scenic mountain passes, forests, and villages, which added an element of adventure to its spiritual significance.
  • Due to the remoteness of this place, very few people used to visit this region and successfully complete it but with recent developments of roads to connect national borders along with this pilgrimage, it is now easy to reach this holy site.
  • Earlier local villagers used to host pilgrims in their homes with food to eat and a place to stay. Now most of the local villagers from the region have developed decent homestays providing basic amenities, warm blankets and fresh local cuisine to add to the visitors comfort.

Peaks & Highest Points Accessible

The region around Adi Kailash and Om Parvat is home to several significant peaks in the Kumaon Himalayas, many of which are visible during the yatra. Some of the most notable peaks are:

Mount Adi Kailash: The highest peak in the Adi Kailash range, standing at approximately 5,945 meters. This peak remains sacred to followers of Lord Shiva and is the focal point of the pilgrimage.

Om Parvat: The peak of Om Parvat is visible during the yatra and is considered one of the most sacred mountains in the region. It rises to around 5,590 meters. The shape of the “Om” on its snow-covered slopes is most visible during certain times of the year, adding a mystical allure to the area.

Kailash Parvat ( Mount Kailash): Though distant, the Tibetan Mount Kailash is often mentioned in connection with Adi Kailash. Pilgrims often see the distant silhouette of the holy mountain, which is considered the physical abode of Lord Shiva. However, it is not directly part of the Adi Kailash range but lies in Tibet, further north. Mount Kailash can be seen from Lipulekh Pass atop 5200mts on the Indo-Tibet Border.

Other Peaks and Mountains: The region is dotted with numerous other smaller peaks and ridges, some unnamed, but they contribute to the stunning views and the sense of isolation and serenity that makes this region so unique.
